The Black Kings Awards: A Legacy of Resilience

16th Annual Juneteenth Awards Ceremony

This gallery, captured by Keith Hasvision Rogers for EVARLV, showcases the Black Kings Awards, an initiative founded by Athenia Rodney, CEO and Founder of Juneteenth NYC. This powerful project was born from a deep commitment to recognize the significant roles Black men play in shaping culture, family, business, and movements for justice. In 2025, the Black Kings Awards hold even greater meaning. With ongoing challenges to First Amendment rights, cultural identity, and freedom of speech, we're reminded that our voices are not just valid—they are vital. As policies shift and pressure mounts, Juneteenth NYC stands firm in its dedication to truth, advocacy, and unity, protecting our right to speak, create, and exist boldly. Our 2025 theme, “A Legacy of Resilience: Celebrating the Power of Community,” calls on us to unite across all industries, communities, and backgrounds. Now more than ever, intentional and unified action is crucial. We draw inspiration from Harriet Tubman, seeing each of us as a torchbearer, lighting the path for those beside and behind us. Like Harriet, we lead with courage, vision, and a steadfast determination to uplift others.

KARINE JEANNE-PIERRE

Book Signing at Sisters Uptown Bookstore

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre visited Harlem’s Sisters Uptown Bookstore in May 2025 to sign copies of her memoir, Moving Forward: A Story of Hope, Hard Work, and the Promise of America. The event honored her Haitian-American roots and her historic journey from Queens to the Biden administration. Sisters Uptown, Harlem’s last Black-owned bookstore, offered an intimate space for candid conversation and community connection. Jean-Pierre emphasized that her story is meant to inspire action and resilience. Her return to Harlem marked both a celebration of identity and a call for civic engagement.
